My Fast Running Playlist
I can't share my running playlist without first sharing a little backstory…
Why I Run.
I’ve always said running is part of who I am.
I started running in high school to stay in shape for soccer, basketball and swimming (I played a lot of sports!). The more I ran, the more I fell in love with it.
Back then I didn't even wear a watch. On my route there was a house with an outdoor clock hanging on the side porch, and I'd glance at it as I ran by to see my time. I wore one of those old portable radios with the black metal headband and squishy foam headphones. If you know, you know.
My senior year of high school, I walked on to the cross-country team which led to running at the State meet. This then led to a few college offers, but I turned them down because I wanted my focus to be on school and enjoying college and keep running for fun.
And that's exactly what I did. And over the years, running never left me.
Running stayed with me through college, law school, my career, and motherhood. I've run countless races. I call myself a lifetime runner because I'm not always chasing personal records. I run because I genuinely love it. I love how I feel running - it’s like my therapy of sorts. I love how I feel afterward. I love being outside. I love clearing my head. I love chasing that runner's high. I have some of my best thinking during my runs.
Before kids, a 6-8 mile run before work was the norm on a weekday. And my Saturday morning runs were 8-9 miles… and I never really thought twice about it!
Then I had three kids close in age. And surprisingly, I was the kind of pregnant woman who did NOT enjoy running. I had spent my whole life loving how running felt, and pregnancy completely changed that feeling. With each pregnancy, I stopped running around 20 weeks and switched to walking. The second running stopped being enjoyable, I gave myself permission to stop - for a season.
And slowing down for those seasons also shaped how I viewed running. Because now my running life looks different.
These days my runs are efficient, shorter, and faster. Most are about 30-40 minutes, usually somewhere between 3-5 miles.
I've realized a great run doesn't have to last an hour.
Some of my favorite runs are the quick ones that fit in before I start my day. I prefer morning runs. 30-40 minutes to start the day, reset my mind, boost my mood… and remind me why I've loved running for so many years.
And then there's the music.
The music is everything!
I'm the kind of person who finds 2-3 songs I love, and I listen to them on repeat until I can't hear them one more time. Then I find a few new favorites and do it all over again.
There's no science behind it. It's simply the beat, the energy, and the feeling a song gives me that somehow makes me run better.
Below is my fast running playlist. I’m updating this list as I find new running songs I play on repeat!
