Easy Chewy Sugar Cookies

Sharing a family favorite today! When I want to make an easy chewy sugar cookie… I am making this recipe. It’s one I’ve been making since I was a teenager. And you know how I feel about the classics that I have made since I was young. My tried-and-true recipes I turn to time and time again when I want a really good cookie. This is one of those recipes!

This sugar cookie recipe is also one of the ten recipes I share in my Cookie E-Cookbook. I wanted to put all my top recipes in one place so be sure to grab a copy, if you haven’t already. You can get it, here. I printed it and I keep this book in my kitchen. When I need to make a cookie… it’s usually a recipe from this cookie e-book.

Here are the ingredients you will need. It’s a rather simple recipe! I usually have all of the ingredients on hand.

  • All-purpose flour

  • Baking soda

  • Baking powder

  • Salt

  • Unsalted Butter

  • White sugar

  • Egg

  • Pure vanilla extract

  • Buttermilk

  • Sprinkles (optional - for rolling the dough balls in before baking)

When we recently made these, my two year old and I rolled them in sprinkles before baking. But, you can also just roll in sugar before baking and not use sprinkles. My kids just love everythingggg with sprinkles on it :)

This is a good one! Enjoy!

Chewy Sugar Cookies

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp. baking soda

  • ½ tsp baking powder

  • pinch of salt

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (2 sticks)

  • 1 ½ cups white sugar

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract

  • 3-4 tablespoons buttermilk, optional (tip: if you only have milk, add a dash of white vinegar to it to make buttermilk)

  • Sprinkles (optional - for rolling the dough balls in before baking)

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine flour, baking soda, baking powder and whisk with pinch of salt. Set aside.

  2. In a mixer, cream butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla.

  3. Blend in dry ingredients - add the buttermilk to moisten and make soft but not too watery. **NOTE: If don't use the buttermilk then decrease the flour to 2 1/4 cups. The buttermilk keeps these moist but I've made them perfectly without it!**

  4. Roll into 1 tablespoon-sized balls and roll the balls in white sugar. Or, if you want these to have sprinkles, roll the dough balls in sprinkles instead of white sugar.

  5. Bake at 375 for 8 -10 minutes. Cool for 3-5 minutes on the pan. Then, remove to wire rack and cool completely.
