Meet HoldOn Bags: My favorite compostable trash bags and kitchen bags

HoldOn Compostable Trash Bags

If you have been following me for a while, you know I am all about a brand with a mission. There is something super special when you support a brand that is out there trying to make a difference. Especially when it comes to the environment.

It is so easy to think we are all just one person, and our use of an everyday product that is better for the earth really won’t matter because so many out there are destroying it. But, what if we inspired someone else to make a change and use an everyday product that was better for the earth, and then they inspired their neighbor, who inspired their friend, who inspired their friend… before long, there are a lot of people out there using an everyday product that is better for the earth.

What is an everyday product?

A kitchen trash bag.

Do you throw your trash out at the end of the day? I know we do! When I think about it, that is 365 trash bags, at least, for our small family a year. Those bags are going to the landfills and take hundreds of years to break down. And that is just in my home. Think about how many people are on this earth and around us. That is a lot of plastic at the landfill, just sitting there for hundreds of years.

Experts have said that single-use plastic is the worst kind of plastic. At every stage: production, disposal and decomposition - single use plastic bags harm our earth, our water and our bodies.

Let’s breakdown a few really depressing stats (I am really good at talking about the depressing reality, ask my husband LOL)

  • 100 Billion Bags are tossed each year. That is a garbage truck full every 60 seconds!

  • It takes 1,000 years for a plastic bag to break down in a landfill, emitting toxic gases and leaving behind microplastic debris!

  • Traditional plastic bags end up in the environment and have become a problem. The microplastics pollute our water and food sources, and wind up in our bodies. On average, we are consuming a credit card work of microplastic in one week!!!

See, I told you that was depressing.

So, let’s help change all this, okay?!?! And the good news is there is a brand I found out there that is making it SUPER easy to change all of this.

Not to be too dramatic, but using HoldOn Bags has been one of my most-loved changes I have made in the last year in our home.

HoldOn was started from the idea that trash bags and storage bags are irreplaceable staples… BUT, do they need to be 100% traditional plastic? NO! There is a better way.

I love these bags because they are 100% plant-based and compostable, yet are just as strong and durable as traditional trash bags - so you don’t have to sacrifice convenience for the planet and our health. These bags also don’t have the harmful forever chemicals and microplastics that are in traditional bags. And HoldOn is a certified B Corporation, taking into account people and planet. I love supporting B Corps.

How do you use HoldOn Bags?

I have gotten this question before. How do you use HoldOn bags? And the answer is simple!!! You use just as you would a traditional plastic bag!

What HoldOn bags I use:

  • The large kitchen trash bag. This is what you will put in your kitchen trash instead of a plastic bag. Then, at the end of the day, you take out to your dumpster/trash can and throw out just like you would a plastic trash bag! You use these bags the same way. The difference is that HoldOn bags will break down in weeks at the landfill and not harm our environment!

  • Small Trash Bags. We use this bag for small bathroom trash cans.

  • The sandwich bags. We use these so much with our kids. Especially when you need a disposable plastic bag. These are durable and thick, so I will even reuse if they don’t get dirty! Use these for anything you would normally use a single-use plastic bag for.

  • The Gallon Bags. We use these whenever we need a gallon-sized bag. They freeze well, too!

  • Bamboo Organizers: If you get the sandwich and gallon bags, I highly recommend these bamboo organizers that will make it super easy to take out a bag. I put these organizers in our kitchen drawer.

If you want to try out HoldOn, they gave me a 15% off code to share with my people. Code “urbanapron” will save you 15% off!!

You can browse their site, here. You can also find on Amazon, or sometimes at Target!

If you try HoldOn Bags, let me know how it goes! I have really been enjoying them and it feels good to know I am making a small change in my everyday life that is helping be part of the climate change solution and not the problem.

And if you want to implement more changes to help our earth, I rounded up 6 ways to live more sustainably in a blog post, here.
