Natural Stovetop Simmering Scents for the New Year

Happy New Year!

I always LOOOOVE the holiday season soooo much and I am so sad when it’s over... BUT I also really love the start of a new year. The decorations are down, a new year has begun, and it feels like such a blank slate. I always feel refreshed. We also try to eat healthier and cook more at the start of the year, so that also gives me all the feels of a fresh start.

Throughout December, the simmering scents I have shared on my blog (and on St. Louis Mom and Feast Magazine), are always on the stove. I am obsessed and also dry out the oranges and gift them! Then, come January, I want to keep that going into the new year, but with a fresh twist as I look forward to spring. Think - lots of fresh lemons and fresh herbs. I am calling this time “pre-spring”! It makes me happy.

Below are two stovetop scent variations that I love to make in January. These are also a great non-toxic way to make your house smell fresh yet also cozy. You can also watch me make this on Instagram video here.

Lemon + Rosemary

  • 1-2 fresh lemons, sliced

  • 3-4 sprigs fresh rosemary

  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks

Directions:

  1. Place the contents in a pot and fill with water. Place on stove and simmer on low. As water as needed. When you are done simmering for the day, you can store in the refrigerator and use another day, just add water to the pot and simmer the next day!

Lemon + Mint + Thyme

  • 1-2 fresh lemons, sliced

  • 3-4 sprigs fresh thyme

  • small handful of fresh mint

  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks

Directions:

  1. Place the contents in a pot and fill with water. Place on stove and simmer on low. As water as needed. When you are done simmering for the day, you can store in the refrigerator and use another day, just add water to the pot and simmer the next day!
